Scholars & Donors 2021-22 Recognition Report

Since awarding our first $100 scholarship in 1899, the Texas Exes’ scholarship program has become one of the largest alumni association programs in the country. As the association has grown to more than 107,000 members, our efforts in this vital area have expanded enormously. In the 2021-22 academic year, we’ll award over $4 million to approximately 730 UT students.

At the Texas Exes, we believe there is no greater tribute to our alma mater than helping the next generation of Longhorns succeed. Scholarship awards unlock opportunities for students of all backgrounds, pay tribute to someone special, and help alumni unite around a wonderful cause. Our hope is that these extraordinary students go on to become caring alumni who stay connected to the university and aspire to give the same life-changing gift to others.

Named Scholarships

Texas Exes Named Scholarship Recipients

Named Scholarships are the most common type of scholarship at the Texas Exes. Established by loyal alumni, friends, and students of The University of Texas, these scholarships serve as memorials to loved ones, pay tribute to the university, and honor affinity groups.

The Texas Exes administers more than 300 named scholarship funds. Each has its own criteria, according to the wishes of the donor. They can be highly specific or fairly broad. Some are merit-based and some require financial need. Others target students in specific academic disciplines or extracurricular organizations. Some factor in race, leadership qualities, or hometown. The range is truly enormous.

This year, 353 students will receive scholarships totaling $1,216,765 from 238 funds, with eight new scholarships awarded for the first time this year.

Thanks to your generosity, I will become the first person in my family to attend and graduate from a university. I am so excited and thankful to have this scholarship assist me in this next chapter of my life as I look to achieve new honors in the computer science field and encourage young girls to follow their passions. Throughout these next four years, I will strive to my donors proud. I am forever grateful and will never forget the compassion that you have shown to my family and I. I am so excited to become a Longhorn!

– Sarah Pavlas, Nan Bennett Outlar Memorial Scholarship

Being first-generation, our financial burden has always been the biggest obstacle in how I’d receive an education. Being awarded this scholarship does not only lift the stress off my shoulders but my family’s as well and words cannot express how appreciative I am. As I get ready for the big transition in the fall, I know that I can concentrate more on my academics and preparation for my dream of becoming a nurse with much less financial stress. Once again, thank you very much for enabling me to reach my fullest personal and academic potential with the help of The Mike Wells Scholarship.

Chapter & Network Scholarships

Chapter & Network Scholarship Recipients

One of the most tangible ways that alumni stay connected to the university is through participation in their local Texas Exes chapter or affinity network.

Chapters are geographically based groups, both domestic and international, that engage alumni through social, community service, cultural, business networking, student development, and scholarship fundraising events.

Networks are national groups organized around ethnicity, profession, or strong affinity to a UT student organization that engage alumni through events and philanthropy.

There are over 120 domestic chapters, 30 international chapters, and nine networks across the globe.  On the whole, 59 chapters and networks will award $533,950 to 307 students this year.

Your selfless contributions to help fund the education of fellow Longhorns is admirable, and I hope to one day also give back to continue promoting the education of the world’s future. Your aid, no matter the size, will not just be helping Longhorns while in Austin but will allow them to focus on education and innovation that will be a catalyst for change for years to come. As they say, "What starts here changes the world."

– Jayln Derry, Dallas Chapter Scholarship

Because of your contributions, I will have the opportunity to focus and to learn how to create stories for the next generation. I hope to influence other children the way I have been influenced by these sorts of media. I want to share meaningful messages of hope and joy through television and even video games, which is something that all stories in the entertainment industry have the potential to do. Thank you again for investing in me and my dreams!

– Eula Tomamao, Highland Lakes Chapter Scholarship

Opportunity Scholarships

Generous alumni who establish Opportunity Scholarships invest in students from traditionally underrepresented groups, defined geographic regions, specific community or student organizations, and economically disadvantaged families. All Opportunity Scholarship recipients have demonstrated leadership potential. Opportunity scholarships are currently offered through Chapter, Named, and Network Scholarships. The Texas Exes is committed to unlocking student potential by removing financial barriers to a world-class education and providing significant scholarship awards. This year, we awarded 98 scholarship recipients over $290,000.
