70 for 70: The Precursors
On March 8, 1956, Board of Regents Chairman Tom Sealy and University of Texas President Logan Wilson, released a joint statement that reiterated
the University of Texas would admit qualified students regardless of race. The news release also addressed student housing:
"In July 1955, the Regents announced that beginning with the fall semester of 1956, the University
would institute entrance examinations and would admit qualified applicants at all levels without reference to race.”
In September 1956, approximately 85 courageous pioneers arrived on the Austin campus, opening the doors for many. Their stalwart perseverance paved the way for the advancement of civil rights on the Forty Acres and throughout the United States. This year, we are honoring 70 years since that arrival with our 70 for 70 Campaign.
In 1956, The Precursors became the first Black undergraduate students to enroll at The University of Texas at Austin. Their courage changed the Forty Acres forever. Seventy years later, the Texas Exes Black Alumni Network invites alumni, friends, and supporters to honor their legacy by helping open doors for the next generation of Black Longhorns.

The 70 for 70 Campaign is a fundraising initiative led by the Texas Exes Black Alumni Network to honor The Precursors and raise scholarship support for students attending The University of Texas at Austin.
Who were The Precursors?
The Precursors were the first Black undergraduate students admitted to The University of Texas at Austin in 1956. Their courage and perseverance helped shape the future of the university and the generations of Black Longhorns who followed.
Where does my gift go?
Gifts support the Texas Exes Black Alumni Network Legacy Scholarship Fund, which helps provide scholarship support for students attending UT Austin.
How much should I give?
Supporters are encouraged to give $70 or any denomination of $70, such as $140, $210, or $700. Gifts of any amount are appreciated and help move the campaign closer to its $70,000 goal.
What are the campaign goals?
The campaign seeks to raise at least $40,000 by January 2027 and $70,000 by May 1, 2027.
