In sixth grade, I asked my grandfather if I could become his business partner at his visa-consulting company, established over decades in the state of Kerala, India. In response, he asked me, “What could you see yourself doing 24 hours a day with a smile on your face?” As any serious final-round interview candidate would, I answered, “Visa applications?”

In reality, I first began searching for my true answer to this fundamental entrepreneurial question during my research experiences in high school. At the University of Houston, I explored the largely theoretical world of probabilistic random walks, where abstract mathematical principles reveal consequential patterns. At Rice University, I joined a team of scientists optimizing energy transfer through the thermal windows used by global manufacturing companies. In this lab, every solution had to first contend with the practical constraints of manufacturing cost and environmental impact.

I caught myself alternating between what was theoretical and what was practical, choosing whether I wanted to embrace the limitations of the real world. At UT Austin, however, I will have the opportunity to integrate both domains: converting novel engineering discoveries into readily available technological solutions for people around the world. When I learned about the dual-degree Texas ECB program, I knew it was the perfect undergraduate program for my goal of becoming an engineering industry leader with expertise in both technical product innovation and business management.

I now understand the importance of my grandfather’s question: it is impossible to cheat passion. Through UT Austin and the Forty Acres Scholars Program, I will explore how intentional business leadership can transform promising engineering ideas into scalable real-world solutions.

What drew you to the Forty Acres Scholars Program?
I was drawn to the Forty Acres Scholars Program because of the opportunity to join a community built upon ambition and diversity. Every scholar I met over the Finalist Weekend was pursuing their goals relentlessly while simultaneously exploring there passions in creative and unique ways. I was also keen to join the program because of the diversity of student backgrounds, academic interests, and personalities inherent in the Forty Acres Scholars community. Additionally, I found the opportunities for both personal and professional development built into the Forty Acres Scholars Program perfect for what I envision out of my time in college. I learned that the program offers so much more than just a check; it offers experiences, enrichment, and connection that will impact me well beyond my graduation date.
