WHAT HINTS CAN YOU GIVE ME TO INCREASE MY CHANCES OF RECEIVING A SCHOLARSHIP? Here are some helpful tips from the Texas Exes Scholarship Committee and former recipients. These are not rules; just good suggestions!!
-
DON’T WAIT!!!Last minute applications are more subject to computer problems. Save and print your application for future reference. Follow all the instructions on the online application carefully!
-
HAVE YOUR MOM/DAD READ IT! Strike that. HAVE A BUNCH OF PEOPLE READ IT! Especially the Essays! In addition to looking at it yourself, have at least one teacher or parent look at your entire application. A poorly written application tells the committee that the student does not care enough to write correctly or double check.
-
DON’T LEAVE BLANKS! Even if it is 0 or N/A, fill it out. This especially applies to financial information. We are giving out $$, so we need all your financial info to make an informed decision. The only exceptions are questions that ask for a list: if your list does not fill the provided lines, just leave the extra lines blank.
-
BE YOURSELF! Don’t make up stuff or exaggerate. We want to get to know YOU. The best essays communicate the writer’s personality. Stay loose, try to show some flair and personality, and have fun while you are writing. Formulaic essays do not give the reader any real glimpse of the person behind the essay, but if you can impart some of your feelings, passions, quirks, or other bits of personality, the reader will feel a stronger sense of kinship and will be a stronger advocate of your application.
-
FORWARD THINKING! LEAVE NO QUESTION MARKS! If you have had a job in college or plan to, list your expected income in the Financial Section for the following year. If you leave something out by mistake, we won’t know if it was an error or left out on purpose! Also, if you have financial need as an answer to a question or apply for a scholarship based on financial need, remember to also apply for assistance from UT’s financial aid office and/or indicate that you are willing to take out loans. If your need is not severe enough for you to take action, it is probably not severe enough for the readers to take action either!!
-
IF THE SCHOLARSHIP YOUR ARE APPLYING FOR REQUIRES RECOMMENDATION LETTERS, THEN HELP OUT YOUR RECOMMENDERS! GIVE THEM SOME EXAMPLES. A good recommendation letter should not just describe the positive qualities of a student, but also give concrete examples of compassion, a sense of humor, leadership, or whatever qualities it describes. Every applicant has a good letter of recommendation, so help your letter-writer make your recommendation stand out to the reader.
Still have some questions left unanswered? Please feel free to call our friendly Scholarship Department for more tips and hopefully answers to those burning questions! We want to help!
