Chapter Leader Resource Guide

Committees

TEXAS EXES COMMITTEES

Committees provide a valuable channel for members’ input and involvement with The Texas Exes. Each committee is chaired by a Texas Ex appointed by the president. Some of the committees are limited to a certain number of members who have experience in that subject, while others are open to new members. All committee members are required to be current dues-paying members of the Texas Exes.

At the discretion of the Board of Directors, other committees may be established and their members appointed by the president to address any important phase of Texas Exes® work.

STANDING COMMITTEES

Finance Committee: 

• Oversees The Association’s overall financial status and strategy.
• Reviews The Association’s financial health through monthly analysis of Association financial statements.
• Reviews the annual audit and recommends changes in internal controls made by independent auditors.
• Reviews the proposed annual budget and recommend adoption to the Board and Council.
• Reports to the Board of Directors and advises the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer on financial matters. 
• Generally composed of Texas Exes members who have a depth of Association experience and financial expertise.

Investment Committee:

• Establishes overall objectives and formulates the investment policy.  
• Composed of 12 volunteer Texas Exes members with staggered 3-year terms, appointed by the President.  
• Generally composed of Texas Exes members with business experience and investment industry expertise.
• Selects qualified investment manager(s), and sets the asset allocation percentage ranges for the various investment sectors.
• Provides a “checks and balances” function for the selected manager(s) to ensure adherence to the Board approved investment policy and guidelines. This function includes periodic reviews of the portfolio to monitor performance by ensuring appropriate risk levels are commiserate with expected rates of return.
• Takes appropriate action on manager selection on issues affecting portfolio performance, investment policy guidelines, and plan adherence.
• Recommends to the Board of Directors the annual distribution percentage rate for student scholarship funds and the business operating account.

Chapter Leadership Committee:

• Serves as the steering committee for chapter programs. 
• Plans and implements growth and development of local Texas Exes chapters in accordance with The Association’s mission. 
• Primary focus is on communication between Association and chapters, leadership development, membership recruitment and retention, and member involvement through local activities.
• Committee composed of Chapter Presidents, Chapter Advisory Board, and some at-large constituent representatives appointed by the Texas Exes President.

Scholarship Committee:

• Develops and recommends policies concerning scholarship administration. 
• Selects and/or approves recipients of all Association scholarships including Texas Exes Chapter awards. 
• Recruits top high school students to attend UT.
• Open to all Texas Exes members of The Association interested in students.

Texas Exes® Student Chapter:

• Provides a leadership training ground; carries The Association message to students.
• Composed of current UT students.

OTHER TEXAS EXES COMMITTEES:

Black Alumni Steering Committee:

• Provides advice and counsel regarding African-American alumni affairs and involvement to the Board of Directors and president of The Ex-Students’ Association.
• Promotes scholarships for African-American students.
• Identifies, recruits and retains African-American students for UT.
• Connect black alumni to the Texas Exes and to the black alumni community through the Black Alumni Network. CLICK HERE for more information.

Hispanic Alumni Advisory Committee:

• Provides advice and counsel regarding Hispanic alumni affairs and involvement to the Board of Directors and president of the Texas Exes.
• Sponsors a scholarship for deserving Hispanic students.
• Identifies, recruits and retains Hispanic students for UT.

Host Committee: 

• Serves at major on-campus Association events to promote the Texas Exes and make visitors feel welcome and at home.

Marketing Committee: 

• Helps develop marketing strategies for membership acquisition and member services.

Public Affairs Committee:

• Develops and implements strategies to educate the public, particularly Association members, about the importance and needs of higher education. 
• Encourages Texas Exes to perform public service which reflects positively on The University.
• Stays informed on legislative policy and efforts that affect the vital interests of The University of Texas.

Public Relations Committee:

• Advances awareness of the Texas Exes in all aspects including, but not limited to; events, scholarships, and university-related projects.
• Makes recommendations to enhance the public relations efforts within individual Texas Exes Chapters.

Travel Forum:

• Composed of Flying Longhorns who act as ambassadors for the travel program.

UT Heritage Society:

• Collects, preserves and promotes the heritage of our University. Among its objectives are:  to actively solicit oral and written reminiscences, to educate the University about its heritage and to reinstate or create University traditions that will build a greater sense of campus community.

Young Alumni Advisory Committee: 

• Generates ideas and develops initiatives to increase membership and retention, strengthen communication, increase local involvement and develop new leaders among recent graduates and young alumni.
