Distinguished Service Award - From time to time, we find someone who was not a UT student but whose service makes a profound and positive difference here. To recognize this remarkable service, the Texas Exes may, by a consensus of past presidents, present a special award in conjunction with the annual Distinguished Alumnus Awards.
Texas Exes Teaching Awards and Texas Exes’ James W. Vick Awards for Academic Advising – Each year, we ask UT students to select the teachers who have made the greatest positive impact on their education. In each of UT’s 14 schools and colleges, a $1,000 Texas Exes Teaching Award is presented through the Association’s Annual Giving Club. The Association also recognizes outstanding graduate assistants with $250 (plus $250 from the President’s Office), and gives up to 5 awards of $500 to recognize outstanding academic advising across the campus. The selection is made solely by students.
Jean Holloway Award for Excellence in Teaching - Created in 1970 with an endowment from past Texas Exes president Sterling Holloway and his wife, Jean Holloway, this annual award is presented to a teacher in the College of Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences. It amounts to more than $4,500 annually. Nominations and selection are solely by students.
Elizabeth Shatto Massey Award for Excellence in Teacher Education - Created in 2004 by John Massey, LLB ’66, in honor of his wife, Elizabeth Anne Shatto Massey, BS ’61. The Massey Award is given annually to one faculty member at UT who is a "teacher of teachers" - someone who is preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s elementary or secondary school teachers. The recipient receives a $12,000 prize ($6,000 cash, as well as a $6,000 discretionary fund for educational expenses), and a custom-designed medallion. The recipients of the Massey award are: 2004-05 recipient Dr. Lisa Goldstein, associate professor of early childhood education; 2005-06 recipient Dr. Robert Duke, Professor of Music and Human Learning; 2006-07 recipient Dr. Jo Worthy, Professor of Language and Literacy Studies and 2007-08 recipient Dr. Joan Shiring, Clinical Associate Professor in the Language and Literacy Studies area and coordinator of the Secondary English Language Arts Program.
Texas Exes Awards for Outstanding Teachers - Created in 1987, the Texas Exes Awards for Outstanding Teachers bring recognition to exemplary teachers across the state who are inspiringly supportive of their students, who bring credit to the teaching profession, and who are held in the highest regard by their current and former students, fellow teachers, administrators, students’ parents and their community. It is also a way for the university to demonstrate its role in education throughout the state, to raise public awareness of the contributions and impact that teachers make to improve eduation, and to raise the esteem and influence of the teaching profession. Several hundred teachers are nominated and honored locally each year. The awards have grown from six in 1987 to twelve annually, including two given to elementary school teachers. Recipients receive $2,250 and a custom-designed symbolic sculpture. A total of 227 teachers have been honored.
